Postman’s Tats

I was called up at work by a guy who had alot of old ink to show so he came down to the shop and i took some photos of his old pieces!

The dark eagle and swallow were tattooed by George Burchet in 1967 at his shop at Waterloo.  He remebered going to George’s shop and said there was always 5 people waiting and 1 person getting tattooed.  One day he went there to get tattooed he said some tough guys pushed to the front of the que and one of them asked for a 2 inch lions head on his arm, when George started tattooing the guy made him stop after a few minutes, got up out the chair and passed out trying to walk out for some air!

The devil, geisha, skull with top hat, perched eagle, peacock, dagger, and panther were all tattooed by Rob Robinson during the 60s.  The guy remebers the dagger cost him £2.50 and the total amount of his tattoos added up to something like £20!

Swallow and Rose cover up

This tattoo was sent in by John Kent.  The tattoo was done by Rob Robinson in 1973, It was advertised at £5.50 but he remembers paying more because of the amount of extra work that Rob had to do (Maybe about £8.00 ish).  It was worked over an existing hand poked Tattoo and some pretty bad scarring where John had tried to remove it.  It’s stood up to the last 37 years pretty well considering the condition of the skin that Rob had to work with, the outline is still solid but a fair bit of loss on the colour of the rose.  John had really messed up his arm and is am still grateful to this day that Rob made his arm presentable again as he says, he was sure that a lot of Tattooers wouldn’t have touched the job with a barge pole, Rob gave him tea and biscuits because he didn’t complain, although it was pretty painful!  John really liked Rob, he says he had great sense of humour and very talented 100% freehander!
